She tells him that she is also a slave, albeit the chief of the Queen of Sodom’s body slaves. Lot assumes that Ildith owns these women. As the Hebrews approach their destination, Lot meets the beautiful Ildith (Pier Angeli), who luxuriates in a litter while a group of slave girls in chains precede her over the rocky terrain. By contrast with the people of the twin cities, the Hebrews are presented as a pious and austere people with high moral standards.
Meanwhile, Lot (Stewart Granger) leads his family and a Hebrew tribe through the desert, hoping that he can find a permanent home for his people along the fertile banks of the River Jordan. Tamar refuses to speak under interrogation and Bera has her and her two young sisters killed. Queen Bera demands the name of her co-conspirator. Returning from her meeting in the desert with the Elamite leader, Tamar is captured by a Sodomite patrol. The decadent citizens, who have become wealthy by trading salt, live in luxury and use slaves as servants and for violent games of entertainment.Īfter a night of revelry, Astaroth (Stanley Baker), the Prince of Sodom, tells slave girl Tamar (Scilla Gabel) to carry a message to the king of the Elamites, with whom he plans to overthrow his sister, Bera, Queen of Sodom (Anouk Aimée). The twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah prosper because of their great deposits of salt, which are mined by an army of slaves. Its entertainment value includes a superb score by Miklos Rozsa which raises all of the fighting and heavy breathing to a higher level than one would expect.Taglines: The cities that mocked the very name of God… The vengeance that tore the Earth asunder! "Sodom & Gomorrah" came at the tail end of the cycle of biblical spectacles. I guess that was a bit too racy for the audiences in 1962. The script writers have left out the tidbit about Lot's own daughters getting him drunk and taking him to bed because they think they are the last people on earth. Of course, the spectacular finale is the destruction of the cities followed by the Pillar of Salt transformation of Lot's wife. One in particular has the Hebrews protecting the cities from invading intruders by destroying a dam they have built inundating their enemies as Moses would do centuries later. There are also some good action sequences. Royal intrigues and political betrayals run rampant. Lot himself falls for the slave girl (Pier Angeli). These fun plot additions are distinct divergences from the Old Testament tale. Her brother has an eye for both of Lot's daughters. The Queen has the eye for young female beauties. They both have a ball chewing the scenery and seducing whomever strikes their fancy. She rules the twin cities of the Plain with her leering brother portrayed by Stanley Baker. The Queen of Sodom is wickedly played by the wonderful Anouk Aimee. The characters they meet there are bigger than life. Of course they come upon the evil cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Lot ( Stewart Granger) decides to split with his Uncle Abraham and take his group of Hebrews on a different route as they make their nomadic way across the desert. The story starts out sticking close to the original. Robert Aldrich has directed an entertaining, though far from serious retelling, of the Old Testament saga.
